Kigali at a glance

Kigali is the capital of Rwanda and the usual arrival point for visitors. The international airport lies about 10 km from the city center, according to the Rwanda Development Board (RDB). The city is built across a series of hills, and most trips from here continue to Musanze, Akagera, Nyungwe or Lake Kivu.

This site is an independent travel guide and is not connected to the RDB or any city authority. Many visitors spend one or two days in Kigali before or after a park visit. That is enough for a market, a gallery and a visit to the memorial.

What to do in Kigali

A short list for a first visit, based on places the RDB and the operators themselves describe.

Kimironko Market

An RDB tourism brochure points to Kimironko as a place to shop for locally made goods, such as textiles, accessories and traditional baskets. Opening hours are not listed in that brochure, so ask your hotel before you go.

Inema Arts Center

A gallery and artist residency at KG 563 St in Kacyiru. The center also offers art and movement activities and is open daily. Check the day's hours and any entry fee when you arrive.

Kigali Genocide Memorial

The memorial in Gisozi commemorates the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. It is a place of remembrance. We describe visiting hours, rules and etiquette on our own page, Kigali Genocide Memorial.

Walks and city views

Kigali is built across hills, so streets rise and fall quickly. Wear shoes with grip and carry water.

Car-free days and Umuganda

Two regular events can change a day in Kigali. A transport study from 2025 describes car-free days on the first and third Sunday of the month, from 08:00 to 11:00 local time, with traffic restrictions so that people can walk, run and cycle on the roads. Umuganda, the community work morning, takes place on the last Saturday of the month. The same study gives 08:00 to 11:00 and describes clear restrictions on road traffic and trade at that time.

The exact roads and times can vary, so ask your hotel on the day. If you want to visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial on the last Saturday of the month, note that it opens at 13:00 that day instead of 09:00.

Getting around Kigali

Public transport and taxis in the capital, and the airport arrival.

OptionWhat to know
Airport taxiATAK taxis and Volkswagen MOVE wait at the taxi ranks outside the arrivals exit, 24 hours a day. Agree the price before you start.
City busThe RDB names Tap&Go, a smartcard system, for Kigali buses. A Kigali Bus Services route runs between Kibaya, Kanombe Airport and the city center. Check the route and the fare with the operator.
Intercity busFares for buses to other towns are listed from Kigali-Nyabugogo.

There are no railways in Rwanda, and shared minibuses are an important part of travel. A new intercity fare list from April 2026 gave these fares from Kigali-Nyabugogo, as reported in the press: Musanze 3,821 RWF, Karongi 5,504 RWF, Huye 5,068 RWF and Rubavu 6,554 RWF. These are reported fares and can change. Main roads between the larger towns are mostly paved, and side roads are often unpaved.

Money and rules to know

The Rwandan franc is the main currency. According to the RDB, cash is used for local services, card acceptance is growing, Visa is more widespread than Mastercard, and ATMs are available in Kigali and the larger towns. Ask each provider whether it takes cards.

Rwanda bans plastic carrier bags and single-use plastic. The RDB warns that bags brought into the country can be confiscated at entry points, so pack with paper or cloth bags. For visas and health entry rules, see our travel tips.

For hotels in the city center and by the airport, see where to stay. As one example of a central address, the Kigali Marriott on KN 3 Avenue in Nyarugenge states a distance of 11.3 km to the airport.

Weather in Kigali

Kigali lies at about 1,490 m, so days are warm and nights are mild. The 2024 figures published by the national statistics office, measured at the Kigali Aero station, show monthly highs between 25.7 and 29.1 ยฐC and monthly lows between 17.0 and 18.8 ยฐC. In that year, June (0.2 mm) and July (0.0 mm) were the driest months, and April (215.4 mm) was the wettest. These are values from a single year, not long-term averages. Our best time to visit page explains the rainy seasons.
