Before you go: the essentials

A visa is available on arrival at Kigali International Airport and at all land borders, and you can also apply online in advance. Two things deserve a closer look before you fly: the health notice about DR Congo, which can block entry, and the travel advisories for the border areas.

This site is an independent guide. It is not run by Visit Rwanda, the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) or any government office, and it does not issue visas or gorilla permits. The rules below can change, so confirm them with the issuing authority close to your travel date.

The East Africa Tourist Visa does not cover Tanzania, Burundi or DR Congo. Other fee exemptions exist for specific nationalities, so do not assume that your country is on or off the list. Look up your own passport. Apply only through the online route that the immigration directorate links to. It warns that no single agent is authorized to apply on its behalf, so an intermediary's fee is not a government visa fee.

Health and entry notices in 2026

Two rules can affect whether you are allowed in.

DR Congo in the last 30 days

A notice from the Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) of 22 May 2026 concerns the Ebola outbreak in DR Congo. Foreign travelers who stayed in or transited through DR Congo within 30 days are refused entry. Rwandans and proven residents may enter under set quarantine procedures. This is about the outbreak in DR Congo and does not describe an outbreak in Rwanda. The German Foreign Office reported no confirmed Ebola cases in Rwanda as of 18 October 2026 but urges precautions.

Yellow fever

RBC requires proof of vaccination when you arrive from a country where yellow fever is endemic or has an active outbreak. Travelers from non-endemic countries without an outbreak do not need proof. A first vaccination is valid 10 days after the shot. If you transit through an endemic country, ask your airline or a travel clinic.

Schistosomiasis

Germany's Federal Foreign Office advises against swimming in inland waters, including Lake Kivu. See the Lake Kivu guide.

Safety in Rwanda: what the advisories say

Governments judge the situation differently, and neither advisory is a Rwandan ban on entry or travel.

  • Germany (status 18 October 2026, valid since 2 September 2026): the Federal Foreign Office advises against non-essential travel to the border regions with DR Congo. It names risks around Nyungwe, on the Rusizi to Nyamagabe road and near Volcanoes. It also notes municipal elections from 10 October to an expected 15 December 2026.
  • United States (4 June 2026): Level 3, reconsider travel, for Rwanda. Within 10 km of the DR Congo border the advisory is Level 4, do not travel. Volcanoes National Park is expressly excluded from that zone.

Read the current text before you book, because both pages are updated. Conditions on roads and trails change, so ask your accommodation or the park about the day itself. Weather matters too: Meteo Rwanda's forecast of 21 August 2026 warned of strong wind, lightning, hail, runoff and erosion for September to December. The best time to visit page has the details.

Money, plastic bags and local rhythms

Small details that save time on arrival.

Currency and cards

The currency is the Rwandan franc (RWF). Cash is useful for local services. Card acceptance is growing and Visa is more common than Mastercard. There are ATMs in Kigali and larger towns. Confirm with each provider that your card works. Akagera's 2026 price list is cashless and accepts MTN MoMo, DPO, bank transfer and Visa or Mastercard.

Plastic bags

Rwanda bans the production, import, use and sale of plastic carrier bags and single-use plastic. Do not pack plastic bags in your luggage, because they can be confiscated at entry points. The ban does not cover every plastic product, and there is a procedure for special permission.

Umuganda

Umuganda is held on the last Saturday of the month. Road traffic and trade are sharply reduced in the morning. A 2025 study reports 8:00 to 11:00. The Kigali Genocide Memorial opens only at 1:00 pm on that day. Plan transfers and visits around it.

Car-free days

The same study reports car-free periods on the first and third Sunday of the month from 8:00 to 11:00. Do not assume the whole capital is closed. Ask locally whether your route is affected.

Time zone

Rwanda uses Central Africa Time, UTC+2.

Getting there and getting around

Fares are those reported for the intercity tariff in force from 6 April 2026.

Kigali International Airport is about 10 km from the city center. Airlines serving it include RwandAir, Kenya Airways, Ethiopian, Brussels Airlines, KLM, Qatar and Turkish. Taxis from the airport wait at ranks outside the arrivals exit around the clock. No single fare is published, so agree the price before you get in. In the city, Kigali's buses use the Tap&Go smartcard. Between towns, shared minibuses and buses carry most travelers, and there are no passenger trains.

RouteReported fare
Kigali-Nyabugogo to Musanze3,821 RWF
Kigali-Nyabugogo to Rubavu6,554 RWF
Kigali-Nyabugogo to Karongi5,504 RWF
Kigali-Nyabugogo to Huye5,068 RWF
Kigali-Nyabugogo to Kamembe via Huye11,445 RWF
Musanze to Rubavu2,573 RWF

These fares come from a press report on the tariff list, so check them at the station. Main roads between large towns are mostly paved. Side roads are often unpaved, and how passable they are changes in the rainy season. Nyungwe National Park gives 6 to 7 hours from Kigali to the park, and about 45 km or 1 hour from Kamembe to Gisakura. Treat all travel times as rough. Start the day early if you have a trekking appointment.

Rwanda travel tips: frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Rwanda?

Most visitors can get one on arrival at Kigali International Airport or a land border, or apply online in advance. The tourist visa V1 costs 50 USD for 30 days (single entry) or 70 USD for 90 days (multiple entry). Nationals of the African Union, the Commonwealth and La Francophonie get a fee-free 30-day visa on arrival. Check your own nationality.

Can I enter Rwanda after visiting DR Congo?

A notice of 22 May 2026 says foreign travelers who were in or transited through DR Congo within the last 30 days are refused entry. Read the current notice before you plan a route that includes DR Congo.

Is Rwanda safe for travelers?

Advisories differ. Germany advises against non-essential travel to border regions with DR Congo. The United States says reconsider travel to Rwanda and do not travel within 10 km of the border, excluding Volcanoes National Park. Read both texts before you go.

Do I need a yellow fever certificate?

You need proof if you arrive from an endemic country or one with an active outbreak. You do not need it from non-endemic countries without an outbreak. A first vaccination counts after 10 days.

Can I bring plastic bags to Rwanda?

No. Plastic carrier bags and single-use plastic are banned, and bags can be confiscated at entry points. Bring a cloth bag.

Can I pay by card?

Often, but not everywhere. Visa is more common than Mastercard, and cash is useful for local services. ATMs are available in Kigali and larger towns.
