Lake Kivu at a glance

Lake Kivu is the large lake along Rwanda's western border. Most visitors know it for two lakeside towns and for a long walking and cycling route above the shore. It is a quieter stop than the national parks, and it is a natural place to rest after a trek or before the long drive east to Kigali.

Place names cause confusion. Rubavu is the current name of the town that many guidebooks still call Gisenyi. It sits on the northern shore. Karongi is the district and town about halfway along the lake, and many people still say Kibuye. Kibuye is also the name of a cell in the Bwishyura sector of Karongi District. In this guide, Rubavu (Gisenyi) and Karongi (Kibuye) mean the two lakeside towns.

The Congo Nile Trail

The Congo Nile Trail is a route of 227 km that runs from Rubavu to Rusizi along the lake. It is promoted for hiking and mountain biking. The lake page describes six stages, but that is not a fixed daily plan, and you can do single sections instead of the whole route.

Plan it like any trail in hilly country. Distances on the map say little, because the road climbs and drops constantly. Start early, carry water and food, and ask locally about the condition of the stage you want before you set out. Rain changes unpaved roads quickly. The best time to visit page explains the seasons.

Boat rides on Lake Kivu

One example with published rates, so you can judge what to expect.

Lake Kivu Serena Hotel in Gisenyi publishes boat rides on the lake. The rate is 150 USD for 1 hour or 75 USD for 30 minutes, for up to 6 people. Rides run between 7:00 and 17:00. A sunset ride from 16:30 to 17:30 is also 150 USD. This is one hotel's offer and not a public fare for the whole lake, and prices can change, so confirm the current rate and what it covers before you go.

The same hotel has a private beach, a pool and water sports, but the beach is for hotel guests only. A beach at one hotel does not mean the shoreline is open to everyone. Ask before you plan a swim spot.

Swimming and health

Think before you swim. Germany's Federal Foreign Office names Lake Kivu in its warning about schistosomiasis, a parasitic infection carried by freshwater snails, and advises against bathing or swimming in inland waters in Rwanda (status 18 October 2026). That is a health recommendation and not a legal ban on swimming across the whole lake. It does mean you should not assume the water is free of risk. Talk to a doctor or a travel clinic before your trip.

The lake lies in a border region with DR Congo, and travel advice for Rwanda's border areas is stricter than for the rest of the country. Read the safety section in our Rwanda travel tips before you finalize plans around the lake.

Getting to Lake Kivu

Fares are those reported for the intercity tariff in force from 6 April 2026.

From Kigali to Rubavu

A press report on the new tariff gives 6,554 Rwandan francs (RWF) from Kigali-Nyabugogo to Rubavu. Check the current departure times at the bus station before you plan the day.

From Kigali to Karongi

The reported fare from Kigali-Nyabugogo to Karongi is 5,504 RWF.

From Musanze to Rubavu

The reported fare is 2,573 RWF. Musanze is the base for the gorillas and the volcanoes, so this link suits a trip that covers both.

Roads

Roads between the main towns are mostly paved. Side roads are often unpaved and can be hard going in the rainy season. There is no railway, and shared minibuses carry much of the traffic.
